I recently
underwent breast cancer treatment and was concerned about the logistics of keeping
my preschool open and how the children and their families would cope. My staff
was amazing, offering extra help whenever needed and the parents were extremely
supportive as well. I read books to the children explaining my disease in a way
they could understand and answered their questions to the best of my ability.
Their well wishes helped me to conquer treatment with a positive attitude. We
laughed together about the silly medicine that made my hair fall out and I
remember hearing a three-year-old boy say to his father one afternoon:
“Daddy,
rub her head… Don’t be scared Daddy, it’s just Chris!” His father smiled and
rubbed my head. I found the extra hugs and little flowers picked on the way to
school the best medicine of all. Children often teach grown-ups how to cope
with difficult life lessons using an abundance of honesty, humor, and
unconditional love.
