Ideals contained in the NAEYC and DEC Codes of ethics that are meaningful to me...

NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment

1.1.2    To base program practices upon current knowledge and research in the field of early childhood education, child development, and related disciplines, as well as on particular knowledge of each child.

1-2.4   To listen to families, acknowledge and build upon their strengths and competencies, and learn from families as we support them in their task of nurturing children.

1-4.6   To promote knowledge and understanding of young children and their needs. To work toward greater societal acknowledgement of children’s rights and greater social acceptance of responsibility for the well-being of all children.

DEC     Code of Ethics

We shall demonstrate in our behavior and language respect and appreciation for the unique value and human potential of each child.

We shall demonstrate the highest standards of personal integrity, truthfulness, and honesty in all our professional activities in order to inspire the trust and confidence of the children and families and of those with whom we work.

We shall serve as advocates for children with disabilities and their families and for the professionals who serve them by supporting both policy and programmatic decisions that enhance the quality of their lives.

I chose these ideals because:

They begin with the importance of current knowledge and research in the field of early childhood.

They emphasize the value in recognizing the uniqueness of each child.

They stress the importance of including families in their child’s education and building on their strengths.

They remind us of our responsibility as early childhood professions to advocate for all young children.
